On June 27, 2021, parents and children living in Zushi were invited to participate in an OMNI microplastics collection workshop as part of the Zushi Coast Conservation Project "Wasshoi! Zushi Beach" project.
The workshop was attended by 10 groups of elementary school children and their parents, and was well received by the participants.
The microplastic collection workshop, the second of its kind held in Zushi, continued with a lecture followed by microplastic collection on the beach. In addition to the lecture, the workshop included a demonstration of the latest version of our microplastic collection device and the process of counting the collected microplastics.
The transparent device draws water from the ocean and automatically extracts a sample of microplastics from the water. By making the body of the device transparent, it became easier to actually observe the condition of the seawater and the filtration process.
In the three and a half hours of the workshop, we learned about microplastics, went to the actual beach to collect samples, and analyzed the data. The workshop was a combination of classroom lectures and practical skills, and the participants provided a variety of feedback, including that they were able to learn about important issues related to the SDGs while having fun in a game-like atmosphere, that the actual sampling experience made the issue of microplastics more familiar to them, and that the workshop was a fun learning experience for parents and children.
The Zushi City government, the Zushi Marine Federation, the Zushi Beach Committee, and the Zushi City Tourism Association all contributed to the success of the event. We would also like to thank all the participants for their cooperation.
This is a project that we will continue to work with the local community on as we continue to update and refine the project.
