OMNI Microplastics Ideathon Workshop, 19 June 2021

Updated: Jul 2, 2021

On June 19, 2021, an OMNI Microplastics Ideathon Workshop was held at Seigakuin High School in Kita-ku, Tokyo. 29 first-year high school students participated in the workshop, which lasted three and a half hours and involved thinking of ideas to solve the problem of microplastics and creating prototypes of the ideas using actual objects. In three and a half hours, the students were able to do everything from coming up with ideas for solving the microplastic problem to actually creating prototypes of their ideas using objects.

After a lecture on the microplastics problem, the students started by coming up with their own simple ideas. They were encouraged to express their ideas with paper, braid, balloons, and other familiar materials to see what they would look like if they were materialized. By actually creating a prototype of the idea, even for a short period of time, the students will be able to think concretely about what it is and under what circumstances it will be used, and will be able to better communicate their ideas to others.

In the presentations, each team presented a combination of concept explanations, actual mock-ups, diagrams, and performances. Some teams combined 3D rendering to present their products, some combined slides, and prototype movements with sound, some wrote maps and other information separately, etc. Seven teams presented a variety of ideas for expression.

It was a short and intense workshop where the participants actually made things, and Ikuta sensei at Seigakuin, who was in charge of the workshop, commented that it was an intense and fun workshop.

We hope to continue to create opportunities for people to think about the issue of microplastics on their own through workshops like this.

I would like to thank Ikuta sensei and Sato sensei of Seigakuin High School for their cooperation in organizing this workshop, and the first-year students of Seigakuin High School for their participation.
